I heard Dennis used to play singles with hammers on a telephone book. And he would stop when he made a hole all the way to the last page.

I once read that jeff used to put his hands into a bucket of Ice after a show because his hands were killing him.
Was that correct technique? Could that be from doing snap ups?

For a man as young as Jeff he may have had arthritis. My hands hurt after a long session too because I have degenerative arthritis, inherited from my mother.

Those credits are in 'strong contrast' to the Pink Floyd book I read. Keltner did most of the drumming and Mason might've played a few things (according to the book, not me!) Richard Wright allegedly didn't play a note on the album because he'd been fired from the Floyd after the 1977 tour for his inordinate love of nose candy. Plastic septums, anyone?

Now i'm not saying that you said he played on this or that 5/8 and i know you know that. Its just a posting of what seems in this day an age of whats true and whats not and sometimes we never really do get to the bottom of it.
I didn't hear the Chink of jeffs hands into a bucket of ice after the track so, i wouldn't like to presume anything as i wasn't actually there.
(Like vinnie using d'ose gretsch's the naughty boy)
hmm...i'll have one of d'ose septums please *sniff-sniff*

In response to your post about the Globetrotters, Me2, I have this to say:
No. Basketball players don't play with deflated basketballs to get used to a real one, but they DO lift weights. Football linemen practice against padded mounts (I don't know what they're called). The idea behind this is to overcompensate - build enough strength to make the "real deal" easier.
While some drummers may work out, most generally don't (to aid their drumming, at least). However, quite a few drummers tell of how they bike or do calf raises to build their legs up for double bass - is that bad? Playing on a pillow simply builds muscle [a lot faster than on a surface with lots of rebound].
I would like to see some evidence that playing on a pillow is actually damaging - until then, I'll continue to believe playing on a pillow is as damaging to one's hands as swimming is to one's legs.

I would think the reason whoever said pillows would be damaging is, you're obviously going to have to grip more because there's no rebound. You're making both strokes. So, it would be easy if you weren't careful to hold on too tight, which will damage your hands.

Me2*****Thanks manos....you're actually taking away from the point though. That BEING, bouncing a ball at it CORRECT pressure which it should be at and playing on a drum with sticks and feeling the NATURAL bounce. Unless you want to throw a 5lb dumbell onto the basket ball to compensate or add weights to your sticks?
We're NOT bodybuilders are we? The muscle we need ISN'T BULK muscle is it? **********

Me2***** manos we aint football linesmen either!
They'd use REAL people if it wouldn't damage them, those things are a cheaper alternative and longer lasting and dont sue.
When they push those things they tend to go back..does a human being do that or do they move from side to side? So, Its not the same as the REAL thing is it ...in reality. I understand what your're saying but its not the same. ******

However, quite a few drummers tell of how they bike or do calf raises to build their legs up for double bass - is that bad?
Me2*****I haven't done a survey on drummers and excercise so i cant comment. yes i've seen the interviews (VERY few) of some drummers who Bike ride to excercise their legs.
I didn't say excercise was bad in anyway shape or form. The question IS....DO they need to or, is it a personal thing?
The case could then be said: What about the great D/ble bass players who DON'T excercise and yet..have the SAME if not better ability maybe in some cases? Are THEY wrong? *****************
Playing on a pillow simply builds muscle [a lot faster than on a surface with lots of rebound].
Me******It may well build muscle manos but is it the CORRECT muscle?
I dont know if you know about Physical therapy but theres a popular ball called a swissball/gymball/powerball/pilates ball thats used for excercise. Just using one as a chair can IMPROVE the muscles in your Abdomen without even Lifting weights. Muscles that you never even knew you had by just sitting there not straining.********
I would like to see some evidence that playing on a pillow is actually damaging - until then, I'll continue to believe playing on a pillow is as damaging to one's hands as swimming is to one's legs.
Me2*****I dont think i said Playing on a pillow damages you from what i remember? Its YOUR choice to do as you wish manos. My opinion and thats ALL it is, is that playing on a pillow is Bullshit. BTW. I use silent nights so they dont disturb the neighbors
As for swimming, thats an excellent excercise as your WHOLE BODY is supported by the water (you're unsupported using pillows)so you are not STRAINING any muscle.
My point was THIS. You play a drum/cymbals...practice on the surface that you will be playing on. Thats what i consider beneficial. leave the pillow in the Bass drum.
It doesn't matter what you do at the end of the day....you'll be wherever you are because you can only go at the speed of Life. You can rush to build that extra muscle but, whats the GUARANTEE that it'll work? It might work for one it might not work for another. If it feels good for you..Do it.
Now..Should I blow up that doll i was bought for xmas or wait till the Real deal gets home. *Huff-puff..Huff-puff*
thank you for your time.

I use all the strokes depending on the feel. I dont believe there is a right or wrong way, whether it be bounce or snap ups, its all down to the energy from within that makes you express the desired sound. Once again... technique verses feel.
